The Vaccine Research Institute (VRI), Laboratory of excellence, was established by the French National Agency for Research on AIDS and viral hepatitis (ANRS – France REcherche Nord&sud Sida-HIV Hépatites) and the University of Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC) to conduct research to accelerate the development of effective vaccines against HIV/AIDS, and (re)-emerging infectious diseases.
The VRI’s structure strengthens the links between basic research and translational research, patients associations and the socio-economic world, contributing to accelerating vaccine development.
The VRI is structured around research teams with multi-disciplinary expertise, a network of national and international thought leading scientists, a clinical network of physicians, core facilities and innovative immunomonitoring platform.
The VRI is closely linked to the department of clinical immunopathology (Hospital CHU Mondor), which has been involved in more than 20 clinical trials in the field of HIV and primary immunodeficiencies.
More than 1200 HIV-infected patients are followed in this clinical department. Since 2007, the clinical department extended its clinical research program by the creation of Clinical Center for HIV Vaccinology aimed at recruiting healthy volunteers and developing HIV vaccine clinical trials.
The VRI Clinical Core in conjunction with the ANRS clinical center network, sets up the VRI Phase I/II vaccine clinical trials that aims to identify the prime/boost strategy to be developed in Phase IIb.
The VRI stems from the existing ANRS vaccine research program and includes research teams with multi-disciplinary expertise, a network of national and international thought leading scientists, core facilities, a network of clinical centers, and industry and charitable partners.
The current ongoing projects of the VRI include:
development of vaccine candidates against HIV and (re)-emerging infectious diseases
understanding viral antigen presentation and dendritic cell (DC) biology
immunogenicity of prime-boost strategies in pre-clinical models
study of immune correlates of protection
phase I and II clinical trials
With its innovative and integrated program, the VRI develops an incentive policy for recruiting young high-potential talents, new teams and internationally recognized scientists. An attractive “starter package” facilitates the settlement of the most promising teams within the VRI.
The VRI represents a unique educational opportunity in the field of vaccinology and knowledge sharing.
The VRI created a Master degree in vaccinology since September 2015 with the objective to train students in immunology, vaccinology and the development of research products while also addressing innovation, identification of market opportunities and business and financial plans related to the development of vaccines.
The VRI is also one of the research infrastructures of (i) the Digital Public Health Graduate Program (DPH) founded in 2018 at the Bordeaux Population Health Research Center and the Bordeaux School of Public Health (ISPED) and (ii) the Graduate School in LIfe trajectories and health VulnErability (LIVE) founded for 10 years in 2019 at the UPEC.
